K.Paul Lee Violin & Bowmaker
I am a Violin & Bowmaker based in Tustin, California since 2020. My journey in violin & bow making began in 2009 at the Chicago School of Violin Making in Illinois. Starting in 2018, I also ventured into bow making. Before becoming a maker, I majored in mechanical engineering at Hanyang University in Seoul and worked as an engineer after graduation. My engineering background continues to have a significant influence on my work in making violins & bows. The perspective of looking at things as an engineer has had a significant impact on advancing the crafting of violins & bows through trial and error, aiming to achieve better results. Since my youth, I’ve held a profound fascination for stringed instruments, particularly captivated by the charm of quartet performances. This passion led me to choose a career in violin & bow making. After graduating from the Chicago School of Violin Making in 2011, I worked with Kevin March in Seoul, learning about restoration. Later I moved to another shop, focusing mainly on violin family restoration. As I gained experience in the field, I developed an interest in bow making. While working at a shop, I sought out renowned bowmakers, J.B. Lee, learning how to make bows. In 2018, I came to the U.S., starting part-time work in Virginia. I officially began my activities as a violin family & bowmaker, opening a workshop in Tustin, California, in 2020 I have been actively engaging with professional musicians in Orange County & LA county, building connections and providing instrument repairs & bow rehair and repair. I continue to participate in competitions such as VSA & collaborate with violin & bowmakers from all around the world, maintaining a consistent dedication to ongoing research.
